POPULATION STUDY OF THE EURASIAN OTTER (Lutra lutra) ON THE UISTS.
The Project:
This is a new project for 1999. The Uists are known to be very good for otters but why? At first sight the islands look very similar - there are a number of small islands and skerries joined at low tide and there is also a network of inland lochs and waterways. But if we look closer we can see that there are very different habitats: the west coast has great sandy beaches but how much are they used by otters? is the east coast better with its countless islets and sheltered bays; how important are the freshwater lochs, which are so popular with fishermen? The idea of this project is to seek answers to some of these questions and to see how the Uists otter populations compare with those which on Shetland and Skye.
This project has serious implications as it provides a data base of otter populations and will also identify the most important areas for otters in these islands. With the increased interest in oil development off the West Coast and persistent risk of an oil spill in the Minch, this base-line data could prove invaluable.
