HELP OTTERS IN UGANDA
We are raising funds to help otters being cared for at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC)
Name: "Small"
Spotted-necked otter (Lutra maculicollis)
"Small" is an 8 year old female otter.

She was picked up by a fisherman in Kasule Wakiso district. The fisherman kept her in a drum at his home because he did not know what species it was or what to do with it. After visiting UWEC, he saw two other otters so he realised what he had and asked UWEC staff if they could take her and she arrived at the Centre on 1 June 1999. Since then she has been living happily at UWEC.
Small has a distinct pattern of white spots on her neck and thighs, which distinguish her from the other otters but she is also small in size - hence her name!
Name: "Kigungu"
Spotted-necked otter (Lutra maculicollis).
Kigungu is a male who is about 5 years old.

He was captured in a fishing net by fish mongers at Kigungu fishing site on 25 June 2007. The fisherman kept him at home in a sack for a day and informed UWEC the following day that he was in possession of an otter.
The otter was picked by UWEC staff on 27 June 2007 and when examined it was found that he had an injury on his left hind leg and an enlarged spleen. The otter was treated and is currently in the veterinary unit for close observation.
Name: "Cheek"
Spotted-necked otter (Lutra maculicollis)
Cheek is a 2 year old male

Cheek was given to the Centre by a fisherman who trapped him in fishing net at a fishing site near the former veterinary training institute in Entebbe. He has a few faint spots on his neck and he is bigger in size as compared to Small.
The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre was formed in 1994 to replace the Entebbe Zoo. The main aim was to form an institution that would champion the cause of education of the people of Uganda about the value and means of conserving the wildlife biodiversity of the country which forms the basis of our tourism industry. The Centre plays four roles: conservation education, rescue and rehabilitation of injured and confiscated wildlife, captive breeding of endangered species and a venue for recreation and education.
