News Updates

05/03/2010 Yesterday we had an email from Ricardo Gonzalo Correa who works for the otter conservation organisation, Chinchimen, in Chile.

Sadly Paula Andrea Ayerdi died as a result of the recent earthquake. She was one of the best volunteers with Chinchimen and studied the life and genetics of the marine otter or seacat. The rest of the team are obviously very upset and we send our best wishes to them and to her friends and family.

In a tribute to Paula and her work, Chinchimen have decided to establish an ANNUAL AWARD TO THE BEST VOLUNTEER.

Chinchimen are caring for a young seacat, Chunguita, seen here.

19/11/2009 UPDATE ON SNARES CAMPAIGN

Yesterday we had an email from Louise Robertson, from the League Against Cruel Sports, with an update on the campaign:

"We finally had some good news yesterday on the snaring campaign. Our petition was discussed by the Petitions Committee and the Committee agreed that the responses it had had from the Government to the questions on snaring had been far from satisfactory. It subsequently decided that the committee would invite Roseanna Cunningham to come along to a Committee meeting and be questioned in person on the issues surrounding snaring.

This is a really positive step forward and was an unexpected move for the Committee to take. We don’t yet know the date for the next hearing but will circulate as soon as we have it."

We will keep you informed.
