HI KIDS
IOSF has a kids' pack called "Let's find out about ....
Otters"
which
has lots of info and facts about otters and also fun things for you to do.
Why not try this one?
When you are out and about exploring, why don't you look for some clues to see which animals have been around? You may find meal remains, droppings or footprints. You can't take these home but you can make a plaster cast of a footprint so that you can take it and identify it with a book. Here's how:
What you will need: dental plaster (ask your chemist!)
some water
a margarine tub and old spoon
small strips of cardboard about 8cm x 30 cm
paperclips
some paper to wrap the cast up carefully and a bag to carry it home in.
What to do: Once you have found a good footprint, carefully clean away any bits of grass, twigs, etc, so that you have a clear print.
Fold the cardboard into a circle and hold it with
the paperclips.
Place this around your print.
Put some plaster
powder into the margarine tub and mix it with some water until it is the
consistency of runny cream?
Pour
it into your cardboard ring and leave.
The mixture will get warm
as it dries so wait until it is
completely cold and hard before trying to remove it - this will take about
half an hour. Clean off any mud that is attached to your cast, wrap it
carefully and take it home.
Have fun!
